Good food with reasonable price. Clear price tag for each dish, plenty of menu options available in a self-service way. We spent around RM50-ish for 4 persons. Ample parking space.

A large and popular Ikan Bakar place situated near Tasik Raban in Lenggong, Perak. It’s a 30 minute drive from Kuala Kangsar so the food must be pretty good to bring the people all the way out here. The food is laid out buffet style and you can help yourself to what you wish to have and pay at the counter before eating. Drinks are also self service at a drinks counter and the guy manning the counter keeps himself entertained by flipping his ice scoop when he makes the drinks. Since it’s a lake area, I decided to try a local fresh water fish - Ikan Kelabo Sungai. I was warned that it was a bony fish but it was relatively manageable compared to Ikan Terubuk for instance. The fish had a somewhat sweet flesh. The fish wasn’t very much seasoned; maybe some turmeric and salt only. There were 2 dipping sauces provided on the side, a sweet coconut gravy and a spicy Assam dip. Both were on the sweetish side. I think maybe having the fish grilled together with that coconut gravy might have produced a better result. Ikan Patin Masak Tempoyak (fermented durian) was a light and mild version. I prefer a more deeply flavoured and spicy version so this one was disappointing. Daging Masak Hitam was flavourful, but again on the sweet side. I enjoyed the wide selection of ulam and blanched vegetables on the spread and I helped myself to a mix, together with sambal Belacan and sambal tempoyak. Unfortunately, both the sambal lacked the necessary pungency. The Kerabu Selom and Sambal Nyior were both excellent, but again a tad sweet. The proximity with Kelantan is apparent in the sweetness of the dishes here. If only they could reduce the sugar and elevate the spice level, this would make an excellent place for Ikan Bakar lovers.
